TIL my 20 year old attic insulation is basically worthless now
I was reading an energy audit report from Amarillo Public Works and it said my R-19 fiberglass from 2003 is now performing closer to R-8 after settling and rodent damage. That floored me because I thought insulation lasted forever. So which side do you land on: paying $1,800 to blow in new cellulose now, or just adding radiant barrier foil for $300 and calling it good? My electric bill hit $280 last August, so I'm leaning toward the full replacement, but the upfront cost stings. Has anyone else here actually tested their old attic insulation or are we all just trusting what the original builder said?
