My daughter asked me at dinner why the AI in her homework app "knows things," and I didn't have a real answer
Last Tuesday my 11 year old was doing math homework at the kitchen table and she stopped and asked me how the app on her school tablet knows the answer before she even finishes typing the problem. I said something lazy like "it just learned from lots of books" and she looked at me and said, "but who taught it to be nice?" I didn't have anything for that one. I sat there thinking about how I run a small crew and I can usually explain why we do things a certain way, and there's always a reason that a person can give you. With this thing, nobody really gave it reasons. It just got fed a pile of stuff we all wrote and now it talks back to my kid like it's an authority. She trusts it more than she trusts me on fractions, which stings a little. What do you all tell your kids when they ask who is responsible for what these systems say?
