Old lead mechanic told me to stop using my ears, now I use a stethoscope on gearboxes
Back in March at the hangar in Dayton, this guy with 30 years on me watched me listen to a suspect bearing on a Cessna 172. I was doing the whole lean-in-and-squint thing, maybe humming along with the noise. He walked over and said 'you're hearing the whole plane, not the part.' Handed me a mechanic's stethoscope, the cheap one with the metal rod. First time I touched it to the accessory case, it was like someone turned off the background music. I could actually isolate the grind from the oil pump. Now I carry one in my box and use it before I even pull a wrench. Anyone else switch over to one of those after fighting with vibrations for years?
