A fire marshal in Fort Worth changed how I mount every keypad
I was finishing a panel swap on a Tuesday job in Fort Worth last month when the fire marshal walked in for a routine check, and he pointed at a keypad I'd mounted at 58 inches with a clear shot down the hallway. He asked me one question: could a person crawling under smoke reach it? I sat on the floor right there in the hall and my hand couldn't get within a foot of the buttons. That hit me hard because I'd been mounting keypads at eye level for 12 years and never once tested one from the floor. Now I carry a tape measure and stick every keypad at 48 inches or lower, and I crouch to check reach before I drill. I even redid two keypads at a daycare near Hulen Mall last week because of it. Do you all mount low by habit now, or is that just a Texas fire code thing?
