DAE know that 30% of alarm calls are just dead batteries in wireless sensors? A stat from my Siemens rep in Columbus stuck with me.
I was at a training in Columbus last month and the Siemens rep said something that hit me. He said about 30% of service calls for wireless systems come down to a dead battery in a sensor, not a real break. I used to spend 45 minutes on the phone walking people through panel resets before I even thought about batteries. Now I ask one simple thing first, and half the time I'm done in 5 minutes. Has anyone else changed their troubleshooting order after hearing a number like that?
Battery first should be rule one for any wireless panel. I learned that the hard way after burning a whole afternoon on a reset when the sensor was just chirping in the hallway. Here is my order now: check the keypad for which zone is tripping, go yank that sensor's battery, test it, then worry about the panel. Takes two minutes and you skip the phone tag game. Half the techs I train want to jump straight into menus and codes when the fix is a two dollar battery. Nine volt and cr123s stay in my van at all times, no exceptions.
