The 78 year old in Mesa who made me redo a whole panel and thanked me for it
Had a job last month in Mesa where the homeowner watched me the whole time, which usually drives me nuts. When I finished wiring his new keypad panel, he asked if he could see behind it before I closed it up, and I figured he was going to nitpick. Instead he pointed at one zone wire I had run a little tight and asked if it would rub on the stud over time, and honestly he was right. He mentioned he ran telephone lines for 40 years and saw plenty of wires fail from rubbing, so I reran it with a little slack and a clip. He shook my hand and said most guys would have told him to mind his own business, and that stuck with me more than the check did. Do you all leave a service loop on zone wires behind the panel or run them snug?
I saw a video from an alarm tech on YouTube talking about this exact thing. He said the wire should have a little slack so temp changes and wood movement dont pull it tight, and that a snug run can crack the jacket over the years. He also said to leave a loop long enough to pull the panel out a few inches for service. Seems like common sense but nobody ever taught me that in training.
