My sump pump backup battery died during the spring thaw, found a cheap fix

Last April in Edmonton the power went out for 9 hours right when the snow was melting hard. My basement started taking on water and the backup sump battery was totally dead, it was 6 years old. I almost paid a plumber $500 for a new system, but my neighbor suggested I just get a deep cycle marine battery from Canadian Tire for $140 and wire it up myself. It took maybe an hour with some basic tools and now I test it every 3 months with a multimeter. Anyone else run their backup on a cheap battery instead of the fancy kits?
