Picked the zip code over the school district when we bought in Kalamazoo, and a housing algorithm made me second guess it
Two years ago we had two houses on the same street in our budget. One was in the better rated school zone, one was not. We went with the cheaper one since the school zone one was $22k more.
Fast forward to this spring, our lender sent us one of those property estimate reports and the house in the good zone jumped way past ours. Turns out a lot of these home value tools lean heavy on school ratings. So the gap got wider even though the houses are a block apart.
I get that school info matters to families. But it feels weird that some formula decided my house is worth less because of a rating that changes with test scores. Anyone else watch an estimate tool mess with their street like this?
