PSA: my old gut-feel hiring picks vs the scoring sheet we use at my 9 person shop now
Six months back I was the one doing interviews at our little print shop in Dayton and I just went on gut. Hired 4 people that way over two years and 3 of them quit inside 90 days. Now we run every applicant through a simple scoring sheet, same 5 questions, points for each answer, and the owner and me compare numbers before we talk about the person. Last month we passed on a guy I liked a lot on feel because he scored a 12 out of 25 and the quiet lady who scored a 21 has been solid for 6 weeks. The part I can't figure out is the sheet was built by us, so aren't we just hiding our bias in the questions we picked? Curious if anyone here has run a simple rubric like this and what they did to keep the scoring itself from going crooked.
