Why does nobody talk about the day I found out my hiring shortcut was screening out good people
Three years ago I was helping my cousin's small shop in Gary, Indiana fill a front desk job, and I set up one of those resume screening tools to sort applicants because we got 140 of them in four days. I figured it was saving me time, right? Then my cousin asked why a woman with 9 years at a local medical office never got a callback, and I pulled her file and saw the tool had tagged her as a low match because of some keyword stuff I never even set up on purpose. That was the moment it hit me that I had been quietly tossing people for reasons I could not explain to anyone, not even myself. Here is the thing I keep going back and forth on, was I wrong for using the tool at all, or just wrong for not checking its work? Some folks say any screening that you cannot explain is a problem no matter how much time it saves. Other folks say a small business with two employees and no HR person has to use something or they drown in applications. I honestly do not know which side I land on now. Has anybody here ever caught their own tool doing something they never told it to do?
Something similar happened when we hired at my old job, we started doing a quick manual check of the top 20 resumes before letting the tool cut anyone. Took maybe 20 extra minutes and saved us from missing a great candidate twice that year. Maybe try reviewing the ones the tool ranks lowest, just to see what it's actually doing?
