Spent $340 on a used leak detector and it just paid for itself on one call
I do mostly tree work but pick up appliance calls on the side, and I finally got tired of guessing at sealed system leaks with soap bubbles. Found a used electronic leak detector on marketplace for $340, figuring it was a coin flip. First real call with it was a fridge in a house over in Fairview, and it sniffed out a pinhole in the evaporator in about ten minutes flat. Customer was ready to scrap the thing and buy new, so that one job covered most of what I paid. Curious what you all use for leak checks, because I might be hooked on this gadget now.
Heard a guy on a podcast say the heated diode ones beat the old corona sniffers for R134 and newer stuff. No clue if that's true but it stuck with me. For $340 you did good either way, that's cheaper than most guys spend on one call of guessing.
