Used to carry a whole truck bed of parts for a 5 minute job, now I just grab my meter
Back in 2008 I kept at least 6 different timer motors and 4 defrost boards in the truck because I never knew what a Maytag would need until I got there. Now I show up with a clamp meter and a laptop, pull the fault code, and order the exact control board from the driveway. Last week a lady in Reno watched me fix her dryer in 12 minutes and asked if I was even going to open it up. I miss knowing every wire by touch but I sure don't miss hauling 80 pounds of parts up three flights. Anybody else feel weird leaving a job without a single spare screw in their pocket?
That 12 minute dryer call in Reno hits home. Had a lady in Boise last month ask me the same thing, if I was gonna actually take it apart. Pulled the tech sheet, ran the diagnostic, bad relay on the main board. Done. I still keep one timer motor and a couple of fuses rolling around in the console just so I don't feel naked walking up to a door. Twenty years of muscle memory doesn't just shut off. But my back sure likes the new setup.
