My favorite climbing rope got retired after 9 months, everyone says that's fine
I ran a 150 foot rope from Teufelberger and it started showing core shots near the midpoint after only 9 months of regular use. My crew says that's normal wear for daily production work, but I disagree, I've had cheaper ropes last longer. I was doing mostly removals in Austin including a lot of dead oaks, so maybe the friction was worse than usual. I ended up cutting the damaged section out and using it as a rigging line, which worked out okay. But I'm wondering if anyone else tracks rope hours and retires them earlier than the manufacturer suggests. Has anyone had good luck getting a warranty claim approved for premature core exposure?

Ropes are like tires on a work truck, honestly. Most folks only pay attention when something goes wrong, not how many miles are on them. Austin dead oaks are brutal too, all that grit and dust acts like sandpaper on the fibers. I've seen guys run gear way past its safe limit just because it still looks fine from a distance. Tracking hours is smart, but in my experience most warranties only cover manufacturing defects, not hard use, so don't hold your breath on that claim.
