Am I the only one who spends the first 10 minutes at a dig site just looking at the dirt?
Three years ago I was on a small survey outside Tucson and the lead archaeologist told me to sit still for ten minutes before touching anything. I felt silly at first, but then I started noticing stuff I would have walked right past, like a faint line in the soil about 20 feet out. Turns out it was the edge of a roasting pit, and we pulled charcoal samples that dated it to around 1200 AD. Now I do that same ten minute sit at every site, whether it's a full dig or just a walkover with a client. Last month near Sierra Vista it helped me spot a scatter of flakes I would have missed while looking down at my boots. Does anyone else do a slow scan like that, or do you just start swinging the trowel?
