Just got burned by a fake dig site in Nevada. Watch out for staged artifacts.
Last month I drove out to a supposed pre-Columbian site near Ely and the "ancient" pottery was still damp. Turns out some guy was planting replicas for tourists to find. Has anyone else run into fake setups like this?

That whole thing with the damp pottery reminds me of how much fake stuff is just everywhere now, not just in tourist traps. My neighbor bought a "vintage" tool set off some website and the metal was all stamped with modern Chinese characters under the paint. People are getting real creative with the lies. It's like you can't trust anything that looks too perfect or too old anymore, you gotta look for the little cracks in the story.
