Dropped $340 on a DNA test kit for my dog and got back a report that said 'mostly dog'
I'm not joking, the breed breakdown came back with three categories and one of them literally read 'mixed breed groups.' I could have saved the money and just looked at him. Has anyone found a pet DNA service that actually gives you useful info, or is this just how all of them work?
Man that "mixed breed groups" thing is such a scam. I paid for one of those kits a couple years back and got the same junk, like 40 percent "companion breed" which tells you nothing. Here's what actually helped me, call your vet and ask if they do breed checks or know a cheaper lab, some clinics run them for way less than the fancy mail in kits. Also ask around at your local shelter, the folks there have seen thousands of dogs and can usually guess the mix better than a computer. The only time those tests are worth it is for health stuff like breed specific gene issues, and even then you want the one that lists actual conditions, not just "mostly dog." Save the 340 next time and put it toward good food or a vet visit.
