The old stone shelter on the AT near Boiling Springs still has a logbook from 1974
I stopped at that little stone shelter just north of Boiling Springs last weekend and poked through the logbook tucked in a metal box, and the oldest entry is dated August 1974. People wrote down their pack weights, and most of them were hauling 40 to 50 pounds back then, which made my 22 pound setup feel like cheating. Has anyone else flipped through an old trail log and been surprised by how hikers talked about gear back then?
