My neighbor's deck party changed how I feel about railings

Went to a barbecue in Austin last weekend and the host had zero top rail on his 8 foot platform, everyone just kind of leaned on the posts and it felt sketchy... but honestly it looked way cleaner than mine. So is the open look worth the safety tradeoff, or am I just being paranoid about building codes that nobody enforces anyway?
