That $12 tarp saved my whole pergola build
Last Saturday I was putting up the last beam on my pergola in Austin when the wind kicked up and snapped one of my temporary supports. The whole thing started to wobble like a drunk uncle at a wedding. I grabbed the cheap tarp I bought for covering lumber and lashed it across the top as a makeshift brace. It held long enough for me to bolt in the cross beams and get the thing solid. Has anyone else had a random piece of junk save their build at the worst moment?

That blue strap from an old cargo net did the same thing for my deck frame last spring. I saw a YouTube video where a guy tested different ways to brace a half-built structure, and he kept saying the cheapest stuff sometimes works best because you don't hesitate to use it. My temporary brackets failed right as a storm cell rolled in, and I just wrapped that strap around the posts and cinched it down with a ratchet. It held everything square for the two hours I needed to finish the joists. Made me rethink throwing out any tarp or strap that looks worn out. You never know when junk becomes the hero.
