The $80 harbor freight level vs my dead grandpa's warped 2x4 trick
I built a 12 foot garden wall last spring and nothing was square. My laser level kept drifting in direct sun, and I got sick of re-checking every course. Out of frustration I grabbed a straight-ish 2x4 from the scrap pile, screwed a bubble level to it, and used it as a giant straightedge. That janky board beat the expensive unit every single time because it could span the full face of the wall without a sensor. Has anyone else ditched a high-tech gadget for something dumber and it just worked better?

Honestly, that "janky board" winning out is the real lesson here. The tech stuff is only as good as its weakest link, and for you the sensor was that weak link in the sun. Maybe the dumb trick works because it forces you to check the whole surface at once instead of trusting a single point.
