Showerthought: I put a $12 lock on my mini fridge after 3 roommates kept eating my food and nobody noticed for 2 weeks
Turns out the lock did nothing because the problem was never who could open it, it was that nobody in that apartment in Tempe was ever going to say a word to each other, so what's the actual move here, labeled shelves, a group chat rule, or just stop buying groceries anyone else can reach?
Man that stinks, twelve bucks and two weeks of silence is a rough combo. Living with people who just quietly take your stuff and never say a word is its own special kind of lonely, like you're sharing a fridge with ghosts. Labeled shelves won't fix it either, they'll just steal from the shelf with your name on it and act like the label was invisible. The group chat rule only works if people actually care enough to be a little embarrassed, and it sounds like nobody there does. Keeping your food in your room is a pain but at least you stop paying for other people's dinners.
