My $40 salon mirror made my haircuts worse than my bathroom one

I picked up one of those fancy tri-fold mirrors with the LED lights for cutting my own hair. The magnification made me obsess over tiny split ends and I ended up chopping off way more than I planned. Turns out my cheap bathroom mirror at 5x zoom gave me a better overall shape because I could see the whole head at once. Has anyone else found that more detail just messes up your judgment?
