My barber of 9 years said I was wrong to cut my own hair and honestly the $18 clippers did fine

So my barber down on 5th raised his price to $45 back in March and I told him I would try doing it myself at home with a $18 set of clippers from the drugstore. He laughed and said I would be back in two weeks with a hat on. That was four months ago and my fade still looks fine, my wife says she cannot even tell the difference. I feel kind of bad because he is a good guy and we always talked about his kids, but I am not paying $45 plus tip every three weeks for something I can do in my bathroom in 20 minutes. Is there some hidden reason a pro cut actually matters that I am missing, or did I just save myself $600 a year for nothing?
