A school secretary in Dayton handed me the challenge list and it flipped how I read to my kid
Two years ago I grabbed a stack of picture books from the free pile at the Dayton library sale, and the secretary at my son's school mentioned that 11 of them were on the district's challenge list. I figured that meant violence or bad words, so I read all 11 out loud that weekend. Turns out 9 were pulled for stuff like a kid with two moms, a frog funeral, or a character saying the word "stupid," which seemed small to me but not to whoever filed the forms. I stopped guessing what the fuss was about and started reading the actual challenge form comments, which are public if you ask. The ones for a book about a boy in a dress were 3 pages long, all about "confusing gender ideas," and that told me way more than the book did. Has anyone else pulled the public challenge records for their own district, and were the reasons what you figured or not?
