Hot take: I read the book my kid's school banned, and now I think the parents who fought to pull it had a point
I know that title is going to get me yelled at here, but hear me out. Two months ago at a school board meeting in Cedar Rapids, a mom named Dana stood up and read a two page passage from a book her 13 year old checked out from the middle school library. The passage was graphic, way more graphic than I expected, and I say this as someone who normally thinks banning books is a bad idea. I went home and actually read the novel cover to cover, and the scene she read was not even the worst part. Here is where I split from most people in this community: I do not want the book gone from the world, but I think it is fair for a parent to ask whether it belongs in a 7th grade library without any heads up. Calling Dana a book burner felt easy and cheap, and I did it too at first. Has anyone here ever read one of these challenged books and actually agreed with part of the complaint? I want to hear how you sorted that out without throwing out the whole idea of free access.
