I defended challenged books for years without reading one, and a school board meeting in Tulsa tipped me off
I used to jump into debates about pulled titles online and quote reviews I never read. Then 4 months ago I sat through a Tulsa school board meeting where a parent read a passage out loud and I had no clue what came next in the story. I went home and checked my shelf and realized 6 of the 9 books I had been loudest about were ones I never cracked open. Now I read the title first before I open my mouth, which sounds obvious but wasn't for me. How many folks out there are arguing about a challenged book they haven't finished?
