School board pulled a book from my kid's library over one page, so I showed up to the meeting and it backfired in a weird way
Back in September the board here in Cedar Falls voted 5 to 2 to yank a book off the middle school shelves because of a single page they said was too much for 7th graders. I went to the next meeting with the page printed out and just read it out loud, all 14 lines, since I figured people should hear it before they ban it. About half the room was nodding along, but the superintendent cut me off and said I was grandstanding, and the local paper ran a photo of me looking like the angry one. So I switched tactics at the meeting after that and just asked how the review form works, like who actually reads the book and writes the report. Turns out nobody on the board had read the thing cover to cover, they only read the flagged pages. I filed a formal request to see the review paperwork and got a two sentence note back that said 'concerns from parents.' Has anyone here actually gotten a school to release those review notes, and if so how did you word the request?
