Shoutout to the 2 school board members in my town who flipped my whole view on book challenges
Three months back I figured most book challenges were just parents being dramatic, and I said so at a board meeting in our little town outside Dayton. Then a mom stood up and listed exactly 14 passages from a novel, read them out loud, and asked the board to pull it from the middle school shelves. I went home and got the book from the library and she was right that some of it was rough for a 12 year old, which I did not expect to admit. What got me was the board member who said we can keep the book and still let any kid opt out, and the vote passed 5 to 2 on that plan. So now I think the fight should be about parent choice, not yanking books off the shelf for everyone. Where do you all land on opt-out rules versus full removal?
