That chat with an old barber about thinning shears

I was talking to this guy who's been cutting hair since the 80s and he told me he never uses thinning shears on anyone under 40. Said it messes up their natural texture long term. Made me wonder how many clients I've actually helped versus just made look good for a week. Has anyone else had a mentor change how you approach a basic tool?

Is he worried about it thinning out their hair permanently or just losing the weight? I get that shears can mess with texture but I use them on younger clients all the time and they come back looking fine after it grows out. Maybe it depends on the hair type because I've got this one guy with super thick curly hair and thinning shears are the only thing that keeps his shape from going poofy. Seems like a broad rule for something that really varies person to person.

Hold on, you said "super thick curly hair" and "thinning shears" in the same sentence? That's wild.
