I thought patina was just rust until I cleaned a 1952 Ford fender and lost half its value
I picked up a 1952 Ford F1 fender at a swap meet in Ohio for $180 and the guy told me to leave the rust alone. I didn't listen. I hit it with a wire wheel and some naval jelly because I figured clean metal was always better. Two days later a guy who restores these trucks offered me $90 for it instead of the $300 I was hoping for. He said the surface rust was uniform and part of the original look, and what I did killed the character. I learned that a little rust can be worth more than shine on the right part. Now I'm second guessing whether I should have left the doors on my project alone too. Anyone else ever strip a patina and regret it?
