Three years of chasing a phantom creak and it was the saddle rails all along
Three years ago I took in a customer's 'almost new' road bike that creaked under hard pedaling, and I swore it was the bottom bracket. I must have pulled that crank four times, replaced the bearings twice, greased every thread on the frame, and even swapped the chainring bolts out of pure spite. Last week the owner finally told me the noise only showed up when he stayed seated on climbs, which sent me straight to the saddle. Turned out the rails were dry where they meet the clamp, and a dab of grease and a proper torque down to 6 Nm killed it in about 30 seconds. Three years of my life gone to one squeaky seat, and the guy paid me in a six pack of root beer and a handshake. What's the longest you've chased a noise before figuring out it came from the dumbest possible spot?
