Unpopular opinion: I picked the boring 401k over the flashy startup stock, and 3 years later my old team got wiped out in a layoff while my account is up $41k
Everyone at my old Austin office said I was dumb for leaving RSUs on the table, but when the company did two rounds of cuts in 18 months and zeroed out that stock, my boring match kept right on growing, so has anyone else had to pick between the shiny option and the safe one?

Saw the same thing happen at a shop here in Austin back in 2022. Guys turned down solid matches for stock that looked great on paper, then the company did two rounds of cuts and that paper was worth nothing. My old lead lost about 60 grand in RSUs that never finished vesting. Slow and steady really does win when the other option can vanish overnight.
