Ditched my geology hammer for a cheap magnet, found more rocks in a month
I used to hunt for meteorites the standard way, walking grids with a hammer and chisel in the Mojave near Barstow. That worked, but I'd spend hours cracking open the wrong stones and come home with nothing but busted knuckles. Last spring I switched to a $20 neodymium magnet on a rope and started dragging it over dry lake beds. The difference is wild, I can cover a mile in the time I used to search one wash. Found twelve fusion-crusted fragments in 30 days, more than I pulled in two years with the old method. Sure, I still carry the hammer for testing suspect rocks, but the magnet catches things my eyes never would. Has anyone else ditched the textbook gear for a simpler tool and seen better results?
