Can we talk about what the pharmacy tech whispered to me about my insulin price?
I went to pick up my insulin at the pharmacy on Elm Street and the tech leaned in and said the cash price was $98 but my insurance copay came out to $135. I stood there for a minute trying to figure out how having insurance cost me more than just paying cash. How is that even allowed, and has this happened to anyone else at their pharmacy?
My sister works at a pharmacy in Ohio and she told me this is called a clawback, where the middleman company takes back part of what you pay. I always assumed insurance would never cost more than cash and I never even asked about the cash price. I was wrong about that and it bugs me now. Ask the tech next time what the cash price is before they run your card, because you can just pay cash if it's cheaper. It's messed up that you have to know to ask.
