The propane forge is not a sin, stop treating it like one
I switched to a propane forge three years ago after burning my arm one too many times with charcoal, and I still get guys at the shop acting like I sold out. It gets way hotter, way faster, and I can actually see my steel color instead of guessing through smoke. Anyone else use gas and get judged for it, or am I the only one who thinks the heat source doesn't matter if the work is solid?

The older generation seems to think you have to suffer for the craft, like the smoke and the burns are part of earning your skill. But I remember my dad spending half the day just getting a coal fire going, and half the heat went up the chimney anyway. Gas lets me spend more time hammering and less time babysitting the fire, and that is what actually makes me better at my work. The steel does not care if it got hot from coal or propane, it only cares that the heat is right. Anyone who judges you for that is probably worried they wasted twenty years fighting with charcoal for no good reason.
