Unpopular opinion: the week I spent at a hammer-in in Pennsylvania ruined my setup for good
Went to a three day hammer-in outside Scranton last October. Guy named Ray was doing a demo on forge welding and he watched me work my coal fire for about two minutes. He told me my fire was too deep and I was burning steel without knowing it. He had me build a shallow fire with a brick wall on the sides to hold the heat in. Cut my coal use by half and my welds stopped failing on me. I came home and rebuilt my whole forge with that setup and my old way feels dumb now. Six months in and I still get better heat with less fuel. Any of you run a side wall fire like that, or am I the only one who learned it from a guy in Scranton?
