Used a coal forge in my garage for 6 years, switched to propane after a neighbor called the fire dept twice
Coal gives you that sweet clinker control and I miss the smell, but I got tired of explaining myself to guys in turnout gear at 11pm, so what's the real tradeoff you all found between the two?
Propane is just easier on the neighbors and the fire marshal, that part isn't close. What I missed was how fast coal gets steel up to temp, so I added a small blower to my propane setup and that closed most of the gap. You still get cleaner heat and way less ash to sweep up, so it's a fair trade even if it feels a little less like real forging.
