Hot take: the blocky PS1 graphics everyone dumps on are exactly why those games were scarier
I keep hearing people say old horror games only got away with bad visuals because of what the tech could do back then, and that a remake always makes them better. I disagree, and I think the remake of Silent Hill 2 from last fall proves it. My brother in law showed me both versions on his TV over Christmas, and the fog in the original was this thick soupy wall that hid everything past about 20 feet. You could not see what was coming, so your brain filled in whatever scared you most. The new one shows you fog with real texture and light, and honestly it looks great, but now I can see the road and the buildings clear as day. Is it just me, or does taking away the mystery make these games less creepy, not more?
