The 1984 Dune movie is a mess and I'm tired of pretending it's a classic
Last month my buddy in Austin finally wore me down and we sat through the full 137 minute cut of David Lynch's Dune. I waited 3 years to watch it because everyone online swears it's this hidden gem that just needed a better version. Nah, it's still a jumbled disaster with those stupid inner voice monologues and the worst Baron Harkonnen since a bad Halloween costume. I get it, the practical effects were cool for 1984, but the pacing drags like a wet carpet and the ending just stops. I grew up on the Syfy miniseries from 2000 and that one at least follows the book close enough to make sense. Has anyone else rewatched it recently and felt like we're all gaslighting ourselves about this movie?

...and honestly the inner monologues are way worse than people remember. They just dump every thought on screen like the audience is too dumb to follow. The Baron looks like a rejected Muppet with those face prosthetics, I laughed every time he floated. The Syfy version has its own problems but at least it has a plot that goes somewhere. Rewatched it last year with my Dune nerd cousin and we both just sat there bored. Denial is a real thing when it comes to nostalgia.
