PSA: Our Thursday game night went from 7 people to 2 in the span of about 4 months
Three years back we had a solid group of seven that met every Thursday at my place in Sacramento, and we rotated one longer game each week with dinner first. Then slowly it fell apart. One guy had a kid, two others moved out toward Roseville, and the remaining few just got tired of learning a new rulebook every single week. By the end of January this year it was down to me and my neighbor Dave playing two-player stuff in my kitchen. What I noticed is the group never died from a fight or anything dramatic. It just dried up from rule overload and scheduling. Now I'm thinking about a lighter format, maybe a standing two-hour window with one game we all already know, and saving the big heavy stuff for once a month. Has anyone rebuilt a group after it shrank like that, and what actually worked?
Man, that stings to read because it sounds so familiar and so sad in a quiet way. No big blowup, just a slow fade from real life stuff and everyone getting worn down by new rules every week. I feel for you, especially dropping to just you and Dave in the kitchen after three good years. The good news is your plan sounds right to me, because the two things that killed it were rule overload and scheduling, and a fixed two-hour window with a game everyone knows fixes both. I'd add one small thing: keep a short list of games the whole group already knows so nobody has to teach anything on a Thursday, and save the heavy stuff for that monthly night when people can show up ready to learn. You're not alone in this, lots of groups shrink like that and then come back once the pressure is off.
