TIL my buddy's obsession with 3D printed miniatures actually makes sense
He spent 2 hours explaining the layer height settings and why his printer needed calibration, and honestly it changed how I look at all that tiny detail work. Has anyone else had a board game friend geek out on something you totally dismissed at first?

Wait, three weeks on ONE figure? That's insane. I mean I get it now after reading this but like what do you even do to a single miniature for three weeks, carve a whole backstory into the base? I've seen my buddy's painting setup and he spends like two hours on a single eye and I'm just sitting there like "bro it's a half inch tall, nobody's gonna see that." But then he holds it up and you can actually see a tiny pupil and yeah, I shut up real quick after that.

Nah but isn't that the thing though, once someone shows you the work behind it you start seeing everything different? I got into it after watching my roommate spend like three weeks painting a single D&D figure, and now I can't look at a cheap mass-produced miniature without noticing the mold lines and the sloppy paint job. Once your eyes adjust to the detail stuff it's hard to unsee it everywhere.

oh man, i had the exact same thing happen with my friend who paints warhammer figures. he spent like an hour showing me how he mixes washes and why you need to thin your paints. i always thought it was just dudes slapping color on plastic but after he showed me the difference between a good drybrush and a bad one i actually got into it a little myself. now i got a little setup with a few paints and a cheap brush set, nowhere near his level but i get why he's so into it.
