Bought a $12 tube of shin guards for my sock drawer, and I finally get why the old guys at my club swear by the bonus hole
I always thought the bonus hole was a joke, just a silly extra cup the grounds crew sticks somewhere weird for tiebreakers on league night. Then last month at my course in Madison, our pro put one 40 feet behind a oak tree on 17, and I watched a guy in my foursome who normally can't break 95 sink a 25 footer through a gap I never noticed before. He won 20 bucks off the pot and you would have thought he won the club championship. So I started showing up early on Sundays just to walk the bonus pin before anyone else gets out there, and it has honestly made me look at the whole back nine different. Cost me nothing but an extra hour and a half of sleep. Last week I actually cashed in a bonus hole for the first time by chipping it to 6 feet, and two of the older members bought me a beer after. Anyone else here got a regular bonus pin at their club, or is it just a once a month thing where you play?
My old man played at a muni in Ohio where the greenskeeper would stick a flag in a flowerbed next to the 9th green, and the running joke was that the pot was always a roll of quarters and a lottery ticket. My dad played there 30 years and never once saw anybody actually make a run at it, but he says the second he saw that extra pin his whole brain would switch into attack mode, line off the tee, club choice, everything. He'd come home talking about that dumb flowerbed flag more than any birdie he ever made. That was the hook, not the money. It just gave him something to aim at. So I get the 6 foot chip thing, but I bet the beer was really about the old guys seeing you buy into their weird little tradition.
