Used to play the bonus hole with a worn 8 iron, now I carry 3 clubs for it
Back in the 90s at my old club outside Spokane, the bonus hole was just a 95 yard par 3 over a pond. A buddy and I would walk over with whatever club was in our hand from the 18th green and try to stick it close. Beat up wedge, no practice swing, just go. It felt like the purest golf of the day.
Fast forward to last weekend at a course in Boise. They got this 70 yard bonus hole with two different tee boxes, one on a hill, one in a bunker. I showed up with my sand wedge and that was it. Some kid next to me had a 60, 58, and a putter just for this hole. He pulled off this flop shot and holed it for a par. I hit mine 15 feet short and that was that.
I get why clubs dress these up now, it's a gimmick to keep people around for a 19th hole beer. But I miss the total randomness of just using whatever was in my hand. When did the bonus hole turn into this whole gear thing? Anyone else feel like the simplicity got lost somewhere?
