A guy at the Asheville book fair said my spine linings were "too fussy" and now I can't stop second guessing
I was at the Asheville book fair two Saturdays ago and this older binder looked at my quarter leather bindings and said I was overbuilding my spine linings with too many layers. He said his books from the 80s are still holding fine with just a single mull and paste. I've been adding a linen hinge and two paper layers for years, so now I'm wondering if I'm just wasting time and material, or if he's the one cutting corners.
Did he ever ask what kind of paper you're using in those layers? A lot of the old school binders relied on thick, long fiber paper that did half the work themselves, so a single mull and paste really was enough back then. Swap that out for the cheap short grain stuff most suppliers sell now and suddenly two layers is just matching what one layer used to do.
