Hot take: I quit using PVA for case binding after 9 years because of what a conservator in Boston told me
She said the flexibility everyone loves is exactly why spines crack after 20 years, and now I use wheat paste on everything that matters. Anyone else switch after holding a book from 1998 with a split hinge?
Did you thin the wheat paste at all or just go straight from the jar? I made the switch a few years back too and the first batch I mixed way too thick, the pages wrinkled like crazy. Thin it out and work fast, that fixed it for me.
