I finally bought the 200 dollar hole punch instead of drilling holes, and it paid for itself in a month
Last spring I was binding a run of 40 hardcover journals for a local artist here in Boise, and I was drilling holes through 80 signatures with a hand drill and a masonry bit. It took me two full weekends and the holes wandered so bad that half the signatures tore when I sewed them. I broke down and spent 200 dollars on a proper Japanese screw punch at a supply store in Portland, and it changed the whole job. What used to take me 14 hours now takes about 40 minutes, and the holes line up every single time. I've done maybe six book runs since then, so that thing has already saved me more hours than I can count. The only catch is it only punches through about four sheets at a time, so stack them thick and you will wreck the tip. Anyone else buy one tool that was way too expensive at the time and then wonder how you ever worked without it? Curious if the bigger 300 dollar model is worth the upgrade or if I should just stay put.
Wait, 14 hours down to 40 minutes? That is nuts for one tool. The part about the tip getting wrecked if you stack too thick is rough though, one wrong move and there goes your 200 bucks. Sounds like the smaller one is doing the job fine, so unless you are drowning in orders I would just keep using what works.
