Serious question, does a glued spine ever beat a sewn one?

I was talking to a guy at a guild meetup in Denver who swears his perfect-bound journals from 15 years ago outlast his sewn ones, and now I'm second-guessing everything I learned about spine construction, so who else has seen a case where glue held up better than thread?
