TIL my cheap bone folder was actually ruining my spines

I've been using the same $8 plastic bone folder for 5 years, and last week I finally upgraded to a proper wooden one. Turns out the plastic was too flexible, so I was over-burnishing every crease and causing the paper to delaminate on my sewn bindings. Has anyone else had a tool that worked fine for years but was secretly producing a subtle flaw the whole time?
