Why is everyone overwatering their pothos in winter?

I kept losing mine every January until I finally checked the soil at 2 inches deep before watering, turns out it stays wet for 2 weeks even in a 6 inch pot by my NE window in Portland. Anyone else kill a few before realizing they need to ignore the leaves curling a bit?
