Dropped $180 on a laser level that couldn't handle a 40 ft wall in El Paso

Bought a Bosch GLL 3-80 laser level last month for a retaining wall job in El Paso. The spec sheet said it was good up to 100 ft, but on a 40 ft run in direct sun the line disappeared past 15 ft. I ended up pulling string lines like we did in 2005 and lost half a day trying to make that thing work. Returned it to the big box store and the guy at the counter said three other masons brought the same model back that week. So now I'm out two days of progress and still looking for a level that actually works outside. What are you guys using for long runs that doesn't need a receiver every 10 ft?
